Most who visit this blog, love to learn about design related subjects, particularly in the automotive industry. Most of the time we discover sketching techniques and style execution along with fundamentals in design application.

However, it’s also important to get out there and see some of these super cars in real life and just appreciate their beauty. On April 20, I had the privilege of visiting one of Michigan’s most renowned automobile collectors, Ken and his wife, Kristen, Lingenfelter. Actually…they may be one of the very few in the country that have a collection so large, it would most likely turn Jay Leno’s chin in their friendly direction!

The Lingenfelter Collection, is quite a sight to behold. Though I was always curious about Jay Leno’s collection, I felt just fine being surrounded by classic Corvettes, Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s, Porsches, Muscle Cars, you name it! There are some seriously impressive vehicles under one roof. The Lingenfelter’s hosted this Open House event with proceeds going to charity. I was lucky enough to receive a nice poster for my donation and it was well worth donating to the Women’s Breast Cancer Foundation, to see some classic Corvettes and Corvette mods!

The Lingenfelters collection comprises of roughly 30% exotics, 30% muscle, and 40% corvettes. ( I think he is a Vette fan…but not sure )

Now just a quick background about Ken. Ken, the son of a General Motors Executive, has had a passion for cars at a young age. A successful real estate businessman, Ken secured his first Corvette in 1977. After selling his company, he embarked on assembling a collection of many different cars from around the world. In 2008, Ken purchased the assets of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, a company previously founded by his cousin, John Lingenfelter.

The Lingenfelter Performance Engineering team has been instrumental in developing a new range of vehicles by modifying existing OEM cars and enhancing their handling, control, and speed over and above their baseline performance.

I had the pleasure of conversing with his wife, Kristen. Kristen is also an entrepreneur that handles all the racing gear and apparel for the company. What is even more striking in this entire experience was their attitude. The Lingenfelters were extremely down to earth and personable people. I thought I was friendly…but man…if I owned these cars, I think I would have barricaded them off…or put life size posters of the cars in its place….just sayin.

Whatever it is, I have to give respect to a family that is willing to let the general public have a wonderful time and enjoy these exotics…and if anything …make them feel like a million bucks at the end of the day. Now that is good karma!

In anycase check out the photos and prepare to be in awe!

So if you are visiting Michigan sometime, make sure you plan visiting on a day where the Lingenfelters open there collection to the public and skip the zoo. There will always be chimpanzees, gorillas, and bears…but the Lingenfelters will provide you with a memory of a lifetime!

A Big Thank you to LPE Customer Pam Grigas for putting together an amazing photo shoot with Photographer Greg Caparell. We asked Greg to be a guest blogger on the forum and tell us about the shoot and how it all came together and more about his business as a photographer and some behind the scenes info. Pam is the owner of the LPE white Corvette.

And now a word from Photographer Greg Caparell.......

“Dude… you are so lucky” or “I want your job” and most times “Can I be your assistant, you know the light guy?” A few frequent reminders from outsiders looking in that what I’m doing isn’t all that bad and one amazing career path. I have had the pleasure of capturing some incredible things over the last few years, got published in some great magazines and newspapers, met celebrities, musicians and athletes but its not always rainbows and unicorns. As a freelancer in my market, which is not as large as the others, I struggle most days to pay the bills… most people feel what I do is for fun or for a hobby and expect not to pay for my hard work, creativity and knowledge. Discouraging at times, motivation to work and get better, to work harder to achieve success! The story below is a small glimpse on that hard work ethic I put in place that will lead to bigger and better things.

I work extremely hard for all my clients, not just for them but also for myself, and you never know what doors and opportunities will surface from any one job or occurrence. Recently I got the honor to photograph a corvette for Lingenfelter all set up through the hard working Grigas family. It is an interesting and connecting road that led to this moment. Certain events lead to other opportunities. Another client of mine, Break Lites Motorsports(www.breaklites.com), builds custom street bikes, and I was capturing two of their most recent builds, not knowing who the owners were, but rocked and rolled the shoot. Then a few months later, I was working for a custom car shop who was building a ride for someone’s mother named Pam, and realized they were also the owners of those bikes. Mark over at Break Lites referred them to come to this car shop. I captured the new vehicle. And after putting two and two together and got four… bad dum bum. I saw the connection. So I kept in contact with a few of the family members, mainly Jon, and he asked me to capture there ZR1, and to find a model to go along with the shoot.

One of my favorite, eye popping and most compelling shoots I have completed so far! The weather was perfect, the location incredible, Model Audra Miller was great and killing it. I was showing off my home town of Boston within the images and it was close to sunset. We hit up one spot where I have shot before(tough finding locations in the city to capture a car) but I wanted more from this shoot, not fully satisfied after taking over 200 images, I wasn’t going to settle, I never do, I strive for the best, for my clients, and for myself. Looking at the sun heading towards the horizon, I knew what I wanted to create.

We hopped in our cars, and moved locations, and bam right in front of me was the Zakim bridge and that sun inching closer and closer to sleep, bringing an end to another day. We put the car in place, set my lights up and I informed Audra, we might not get the sun in the right position, it might be blocked by that building, but if it doesn’t we will have a short window to capture these images. Nervously waiting, the sun reappeared between a building and the underpass of the bridge. I started snapping like a mad man, probably took over 100 images in 10 mins, gathering every angle and position I could think of and then my window was closed. I live for those moments, working on the fly, using my surroundings to better my images, under pressure, not knowing if its going to work but extremely confident of my abilities to execute it. Always end up by knocking it out of the park. We took a few more images and the shoot complete.

In love with the shoot, I stared leaking images before delivering them all to Jon. The shoot was real strong and turning heads. I was asked to submit some photos to Median Magazine((www.medianmag.com) for one of their features due out in January ‘13. Then the next opportunity rose up, with those connecting connections. Pam Grigas asked me to re-shoot the Vette, with the same model but this time with Lingenfelter jackets, and maybe put a little Christmas flare on the image. After some planning and scheduling, we recently captured the car, weather was just a tiny bit different this time around, instead of 80 degree weather we had a balmy 40 degrees and windy. But we rocked and rolled and made it happen and produced yet again, another amazing shoot.

I have a lot to learn business wise, as I only been working for myself for 18 months. Always learning and busting my hump to achieve the most compelling imagery possible. Either for a high school seniors, a wedding, for an aspiring model, to a well know musician, doesn’t matter who and what its for, I am going to deliver. I pride myself and my business on client relationships, and with my determination and drive other opportunities come to fruition. Who knew capturing a custom street bike would lead me to capturing a few amazing vehicles, and ultimately to photograph for one of the best and industry leading engine builders in the world. It was so intriguing and amazing to hear and see their work, and that corvette is one bad ass machine!

In my words it is a Good day Good day! I am thankful for all my opportunities and people fur thing my career in some way like the Grigas family has done. I look forward to all the other opportunities that will arise, as I get better and further established. My family is my sole motivation to succeed, failure is no option, and I am making progress in executing my passion. With hard work and determination and support from my wife and family, I will be able to make a living doing what I love, Making people happy while creating compelling imagery!

Good day, Good day!
