    From the Optima Batteries website:

Today’s profile on the field for the 2011 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational, presented by K&N Filters & Wilwood Brakes, focuses on the L/28 Camaro from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering and driven by LPE Operations Manager, Mike Copeland.

If you’ve ever read a supercar shootout article in any of the major automotive publications, there’s a good chance a vehicle from Lingenfelter was in the field and most likely laying some serious smackdown on European exotics, usually at a fraction of the cost. Quite possibly our favorite LPE entry in these contests was a 2001 GMC Sonoma.

We know what you’re thinking- of all the amazing Corvettes and F-bodies that have rolled out of Decatur, Indiana, we like a pickup truck best? The Sonoma wasn’t any ordinary pickup, although upon first glance, the casual observer might snicker about the owner being a Syclone wannabe. What lurked beneath the hood, was a fire-breathing, twin-turbo, 427 motor perched on an all-wheel drive platform, easily capable of throwing down nine-second quarter miles on street tires. Fortunately, for the OUSCI field, that truck is not in this year’s competition.

However, what LPE is bringing is a very serious fifth gen Camaro. We’ll cut right to the chase and let you know the engine is a 681 horsepower LS7, with all kinds of LPE goodies thrown at it, including a dry sump oiling system, dual disc clutch & flywheel, power steering cooler, twin fuel pump module with electronic control, American Racing headers, a Be Cool Radiator and a custom side exit exhaust system from Magnaflow. Basically, all the goodies to keep an engine running hard all day long in the desert heat.

On the chassis, suspension and braking side, we’re looking at an LPE 9.5-inch differential with 3.73 gears, with a no pre-load TracRite GT helical gear limited slip out back, with Driveshaft Shop HD 1400 horsepower axle shafts to manage torque and horsepower distribution. The suspension features an LPE/Pedders SportsRyder Supercar coil-over system, as well as LPE sway bars and a complete bushing package. Braking on the 305/35ZR20 meats is handled by 15-inch two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers up front and 14-inch two-piece rotors with four-piston calipers in the rear, courtesy of Brembo.

Lingenfelter’s signature body kit and Specter Werkes extractor hood will set this F-body apart from the crowd and Corbeau TRS seats and five-point harnesses are surrounded by an RPM six-point roll bar inside. Would you expect anything less from Lingenfelter? Probably not, but what about the driver, Mike Copeland?

Yes, it is that Mike Copeland. Those of you unfamiliar with his name are likely to be very familiar with his work. Before coming to LPE, Mike spent more than 25 years at GM, most recently as Project Manager for the GM Performance Division. His responsibilities there included the engineering and building of GM performance and show-related vehicles, including the Hot Rod Magazine Solstice & E-Rod Camaro, Reggie Jackson’s LSX-powered ’69 Camaro, and Popular Hot Rodding’s ’57 Chevy Project “X.” Copeland also supported the development of the GMPP LSX and E-Rod programs.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys running Hot Rod magazine’s drag week in a ridiculously fast, LS-powered GMC Canyon and dropping 700-horsepower LS motors into his wife’s Jeep. We think he’ll do just fine at the OUSCI.

Big Brakes for the Big Hot Rod Project Truck

You can never have enough power, and frankly, you can never have too much braking power either. The Chevrolet Silverado we’re building as part of the CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout has decent brakes from the factory, but we knew that an extra 120 horsepower under the hood and a bed full of goodies would put us in situations where a lot more clamping power at the wheels would be greatly appreciated.
The team at Lingenfelter Performance Engineering ordered up a beautiful set of 6-piston Brembo calipers and two-piece 15-inch (380×34 millimeter) cross-drilled rotors for the front, and a 4-piston, 14-inch (35 x32 millimeter) rotor kit for the rear. That should keep us out of trouble, or at least out of braking trouble.
The big Brembos for the ’07-’11 GM trucks are designed to give you maximum caliper volume and swept area without changing out the master cylinder or altering the factory ABS and stability programming. If there’s an upside to the electronically controlled brake system on new vehicles, it’s their ability to automatically adjust front to rear bias when we add bigger brakes.
If you’re considering a similar swap for your Silverado1500, the only thing you need to be aware of is that you’ll also need a set of 19-inch aftermarket wheels that are designed for the significant brake intrusion caused by the massive calipers. We’re betting that a new set of wheels would be part of your plans anyway.
You can see the details of installing the front system in the attached photos and captions. The installation of the rear brakes is a similar process.
We want you to get involved with the two trucks that we’re building as part of the CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout. Go to the CRAFTSMAN Facebook page to vote for the truck that’s your favorite. While you’re there, you can enter to win a trip to Las Vegas, courtesy of CRAFTSMAN! The winner is going to be chosen October 18, 2011, and CRAFTSMAN is giving away daily prizes as well as a 53-piece CRAFTSMAN tool set every week until November 4, 2011!

We’re so accustomed to working on old cars and trucks it seems wrong and odd to remove brand new parts that have less than 100 miles on them. The stock front brakes on our ’11 ChevroletSilverado1500 had two-piston calipers and 13-inch rotors. That’s okay for some people, but we know the joy that comes with extraordinary brakes.

The big Brembo brakes are almost a bolt-on for the 1500. A tiny bit of clearance on the spindle at the upper and lower bolt-hole bosses allow the caliper mounting brackets to seat properly.

Once the spindle is clearanced, the caliper mounting bracket bolts on with the supplied hardware. Snug these by hand for now; you’ll tighten them using a torque wrench after the rotor and caliper are in place. Blue Loctite is recommended on these bolts as well as the caliper bolts.

The rotors are positioned with a single bolt. You don’t need Loctite on this fastener as it will be held in place by the wheel. Next, remove the long caliper mounting bolts in preparation of setting the caliper in place.

Bolt the caliper in place, making sure the bleed screw is on top of the caliper. Install the brake lines, bleed the brakes and you’re done!

    Craftsman Ultimate Truck Buildout: Update

Just a few weeks ago we launched into the 2011 CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout, putting together two Chevrolet Silverados for SEMA. One will be low to the ground with a forced induction gasoline engine for Hot Rod magazine, and the other will be a tall 4×4 sipping diesel fuel for Diesel Power magazine. Although we tried to stack the cards against us by starting late and setting a hard deadline like the 2011 SEMA show, that still seemed too easy for the pros at Lingenfelter Performance Engineering who are building the trucks. So we’ve slowed down now, waiting for a few more parts to arrive to keep everyone on their toes.

In the meantime, the installation of the Brembo 4-Piston , 14-inch (35 x32 millimeter) rear brakes on the Hot Rod truck have been wrapped up. The reflashed PCM for that truck also arrived from Magnacharger so the team took about 30 seconds to hook up the wiring connections and snap the PCM back in place underhood, completing the installation of the supercharger.

The Diesel Power truck hasn’t received as much attention yet, so it was shipped across town to have the CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout graphics applied. Both trucks will get similar graphic treatments, making them instantly recognizable as this year’s stars of the program.

There are quite a few parts sitting in the back of UPS and FedEx trucks as we type, on their way to Lingenfelter to help us return to spinning wrenches. While we’re waiting for parts, why don’t you go to the CRAFTSMAN Facebook page to vote for the truck that’s your favorite? You can also enter to win a trip to Las Vegas, courtesy of CRAFTSMAN! The winner is going to be chosen October 18, 2011, and CRAFTSMAN is giving away daily prizes as well as a 53-piece CRAFTSMAN tool set every week until November 4!

The physical installation of the Magnacharger has finished. It almost looks factory with the black supercharger body and OEM quality brackets.

The PCM was the last part needed before the engine could be fired with its new power-adder. Since this truck must remain smog-legal in California, we sent the PCM to Magnacharger to have its EO-certified calibration flashed onto it.

Last week, we brought you details on the front Brembo installation (click here to read that story). This week, the rear brakes were finished. The 4-Piston , 14-inch brakes look awesome and we can’t wait to bed them in and give them a try.

CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout Update image

The Diesel Power truck was delivered to Graphik Concepts for graphics. The team there received the truck a couple of weeks ago to take measurements and layout the basic design which they then created with a computer and cut out with their full-scale vehicle machines. They can do complete vehicle wraps or simpler graphics like we’re using on the CRAFTSMAN Ultimate Truck Buildout vehicles.

These graphics go on a lot like a window sticker: Position the graphics where you want them, peel away half of the backing paper and lay the graphic onto the sheetmetal. Do the same for the other half, smooth the graphics out and then peel the top paper off.
