Corvettes at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show

Our friends from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering also had two Corvettes on display.

First up is the Blue and White Superformance Grand Sport we saw last fall at SEMA. The Superformance Grand Sport is equipped with the Lingenfelter enhanced LS7 that offers just over 600 hp on tap.

However, it was the Lingenfelter Red Corvette Z06 that really got our interest up. For the second year in a row, Lingenfelter is offering a Ken Lingenfelter Signature Edition Series. The car features all the great aerodynamics and braking from the Z07 Performance Package plus LPE’s enhancements to boost performance of the car to 800 hp!

Reflections of the Legendary ’63 Corvette Grand Sport in Superformance’s Refined Reproduction

Reflections of the Legendary ’63 Corvette Grand Sport in Superformance’s Refined Reproduction

On the shortlist of the most valuable and significant Corvettes ever built is undoubtedly the ’63 Grand Sport.

Called “The Lightweight,” it is substantially lighter than a factory Corvette, with an ultrathin body and modified chassis. After being fitted with a hot, Weber-carbureted mill, the Grand Sport became virtually unbeatable on the track. For a brief, shining moment at Nassau Speed Week 1963, it proved to be superior to both Shelby’s vaunted Cobra and other GT-class cars and racing prototypes.

Curiously, reproductions of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s remarkable design are not as common as Cobra replicas, even though the Grand Sport was one of the few race cars to ever best Shelby on the track. Superformance is one of the few firms carrying the torch onward, producing a replica that improves on the original, refining a raw-boned racer for the street.

Chris Bishir Wins the LS Fest and Drag Week Back-to-Back

Chris Bishir Wins the LS Fest and Drag Week Back-to-Back

Faith in an extreme street car is hard-earned. Pushing the limits of what a street car is and can be often comes at a hefty reliability price, but Chris Bishir makes striking a balance look easy. Not only did the Fort Wayne, Indiana, resident set out to compete in the True Street class at Holley LS Fest just hours before HOT ROD Drag Week tech day, Bishir won at LS Fest and then proceeded to repeat his win in Drag Week’s Street Race Small-Block Power Adder class.

At LS Fest, Bishir trounced the competition in his gray 1982 Chevrolet S10 with an 8.70-second average elapsed time. That was more than 0.4 second clear of his nearest opponent. While Bishir likes winning—something he does often—his primary goal at LS Fest was to tweak the tune on the recently installed 6.0L engine for Drag Week. Because Bishir’s class (Street Race Small-Block Power Adder) has a minimum e.t. of 8.500 seconds, Bishir wanted to get the tune-up just right to run within a three- or four-hundredths of a second of the class floor.
