Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Presents the John Lingenfelter Memorial Race
DECATUR, Ind. – The John Lingenfelter Memorial Race has been scheduled for Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Muncie Dragway in Albany, Ind.
Presented by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in memory of their founder John Lingenfelter, the “Racer’s Special” event will award winners in the Super Pro and Pro classes double prize money – $2,400 and $1,500 respectively. The race’s Sportsman winner will be paid $1,000.
“John started the legend of designing and building performance engine packages and chassis tuning components over 30 years ago with Lingenfelter Performance Engineering,” said owner Ken Lingenfelter, John’s distant cousin who purchased the company in September 2008. “This memorial race is to honor the great legacy John left for ambitious engineers, racers and motor enthusiasts throughout the world. I share his same vision to continue investing in technology, research, design and testing to build the Lingenfelter tradition of reinventing great cars with precision and refined power, speed and control.”
In addition to founding Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, John led an amazing 34-year race career, racing everything from Super Stock and Comp door cars to Econo dragsters, Pro Stock Trucks and Sport Compact. John was the first Comp driver to break the six-second quarter-mile barrier. He won 13 NHRA national event titles – nine in Comp, three in Super Stock and one in Pro Stock Truck. In early 2002, John took on a new challenge: sport compact racing. In just a few months, he won one national event and had two runner-up finishes.
In October 2002, at the Mazda NHRA Sport Compact World Finals in Pomona, Calif., John lost control of his vehicle and sustained serious injuries in the accident. He passed away as a result of complications from subsequent surgeries on December 25, 2003, at the age of 58.
The John Lingenfelter Memorial Race is open to all racers with no increase in entry fees. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 18.
